Wube Software released the stable version of Factorio 2.1 on 23 October, according to a post on the studio's official Friday Facts development blog cited by 인벤. The update, which had been available in experimental form since June while the team gathered player feedback, is the last major feature release planned for the factory-building simulation. Wube says it will now concentrate on maintaining the existing game and on developing new titles.
The patch is not built around fresh content. Instead, 인벤 reports, it targets convenience and polish across systems players already use. Much of the work lands in production placement and logistics.
Why it matters
Factorio began its early access phase in 2016 and launched in full in 2020. Its core loop — extracting resources on an alien world and wiring production buildings into sprawling automated factories — has kept a dedicated audience for years, and the 2024 Space Age expansion extended that reach into orbital logistics.
Wube said in a May blog post that it had settled on 2.1 as the final large update because the game's overall design and progression are complete and no essential features remain to be added, according to 인벤. That framing matters for players: the end of headline features is not the end of support. The studio has committed to continued bug fixes, platform compatibility work and modding support. Some staff have already moved onto prototyping other games and experimental projects.
Placement, circuits and pipes
Among the changes 인벤 highlights, oil extractors and fuel-based mining drills — machines that were previously awkward to turn around — can now be placed in a reversed orientation. The circuit network gains the ability to separate inputs and outputs using wires of different colours. A safeguard that stops different fluids from mixing inside pipes has also been brought back.
These are small adjustments individually, but they touch the parts of the game that experienced players interact with constantly. Reversed placement removes a longstanding layout constraint, and colour-coded wiring gives circuit designers a clearer way to read complex signal routing at a glance.
Space logistics get a rework
The largest set of changes concerns the Space Age expansion's orbital systems. Rockets can now carry mixed cargo, letting a single launch deliver several kinds of items at once rather than forcing players to dedicate flights to one resource. Space platforms in orbit can also exchange goods directly with one another, a capability that previously did not exist.
Flight performance for space platforms has been recalculated around mass rather than width, per 인벤. Under the old model, long, narrow ship designs held a clear advantage; the shift to mass-based calculation changes which hull shapes perform well and unsettles established blueprint conventions.
Elsewhere, a new unloading facility lets players pull materials straight out of landing pads. The quality system has been separated out so that Space Age can be played with quality disabled. Visuals for assembly machines, oil refineries and rocket silos have been reworked, and the way hostile creatures expand, along with some combat systems, has been adjusted.
What to watch
Wube has not announced what its next game will be, and the studio's maintenance commitments mean Factorio players can expect further patches even as attention shifts elsewhere.
